The Cambridge English: Flyers exam aims to encourage and motivate young learners. The candidate will be asked to:
- match definitions to the corresponding words.
- read sentences of a picture and write one-word answers.
- read and complete conversations.
- read a story and complete sentences.
- understand the main ideas of a text, letter or diary and fill-in-the-gaps accordingly.
To be precise, at Part 1 you will be asked to read some short textual descriptions. You will then map these descriptions to the words provided. Part 2 is similar to the Starters’ Part 2 – you will first be given one big picture to look at, and then answer a series of yes/no questions. Part 3 is all about picking the best matches for completing some conversations (for example, the questions are provided but you need to pick the proper answers that match). One simple picture will be given to indicate the situation in question.
Part 4 is sort of like fill-in-the-blanks, just that the available options will be provided (in text and graphics) so all you need to do is to pick and fill. You may even be asked to pick a proper title for the story provided. Part 5 is like reading comprehension. You will be asked to look at a picture and read through the accompanying story and then fill in the blanks using one or more words (up to 4 words per answer, vocabs may be necessary). You will need to come up with the answers from scratch (the words involved are always related to the common topics of picnics, movies, restaurants, competition, park, sports …etc).
Part 6 is fill in the blanks again with choices provided (this part does not seem to expect any vocab as the choices are mostly grammatical answers). Part 7 is fill in the blanks again but this time choices are not provided (this part is also largely grammatical). You need to fill in one word per space to complete a piece of mail or email text.
Do note that the actual exam version you encounter may have a slightly different structure and format!
